Orenco Acupuncture & Wellness Clinic strives to combine the best of both worlds! The wisdom from ancient traditional medicines cummulative knowledge over thousands of years, and modern scientific findings based on biomolecular models of research.
Chronic disease and aging related disorders are difficult to treat by Western medicine, but Oriental Medicine can help manage and improve quality of life with respect to those issues. Oriental Medicine has not only been recommended for the treatment of acute pain, for example, but also for conditions of chronic disorders such as osteoarthritis.
The early predominant view in ancient oriental medicine was that disease originated from outside the body by the invasion of pathogens such as wind or heat in the changing seasons. The practices of acupuncture and herbal formulas developed to address these pathogens and energetic states of disease. It is commonly known today that bacteria and viruses, for example, are sources of external pathogens causing disease, and the principles of treatment by acupuncture and herbal formulas still applies. Acupuncture has been shown to influence the immune and inflammatory pathways in the body, and many herbs have now been shown to have antibiotic and antiviral properties.
Oriental Medicine went through a period of revolutionary thought during the Jin-Yuan dynasties (1115-1386 CE) in China, and a new understanding on the development of chronic, difficult to treat disease arose. One school known as the School of Supplementing Earth lead to the commentary written by Li Dong-Yuan titled Pi Wei Lun (Treatise on the Spleen and Stomach) which set forth new perspectives on the internal sources of disease, and treatment approaches to managing chronic, difficult to treat, and unremitting diseases. The philosophy and methods of treatment are very relevant in todays culture where patients commonly present with multiple, chronic diseases such as allergies, endocrine disorders, chronic viral disorders, autoimmunity, and cancers.
The Pi Wei Lun emphasizes the importance of the digestive system and environmental factors such as diet and lifestyle in the progression of chronic diseases. Modern science is making correlations to the importance of the digestive system in regulating immunity including autoimmunity and inflammation for examples with direct relationships to the brain. The brain regulates the entire body through the neural interconnections with all systems in the body such as the endocrine, digestive, and immune systems. The Gut-Brain forms a critical central axis of key importance in regulating balance and health.
Functional medicine is a modern alternative branch of Western medicine that is philosophically very similar to Oriental Medicine in it’s functional, or energetic focus on imbalances and disorders. The holistic principals of treatment include supplementation and stimulation of natural healing pathways as a first approach before pharmaceutical drugs or surgery in the prevention or management of disease related symptoms.
The goal of Orenco Acupuncture & Wellness Clinic, LLC is to use both approaches, Oriental medicine and functional medicine, in view of the patients condition and treatment because their energetic and biomolecular based perspectives are complimentary and are holistic in approach.
